Designed to leave accidents in the dust, this zero-emissions Motorrad Vision Next 100 uses self-balancing technology that purports to make the vehicle accident-proof and even let bikers ride sans helmet.

“We imagine all the downsides of riding a motorcycle to be gone,” said the designers. “The vehicle will be so safe that you cannot fall over, and accidents will be a thing of the past.”

As the user rides, the balancing system keeps the bike upright and adjusts banking angles while smart glasses screen ahead for hazards (a real trouble spot with fast riding even on open country roads).

Moving the handlebars adjusts the entire frame, not just the front wheel.  The design of the bike is largely based on the BMW R32, which was designed in 1923. The R32’s triangular frame has been reinterpreted, with bearings and joints hidden to make the frame appear as a singular volume.

The surface of the frame is covered in matt black textile, while body elements such as the seat, upper frame cover and wings are made of carbon fibre. The BMW logo is illuminated in blue and white colours while the bike is being driven, and red strips under the seat form the rear light and indicators.

We tend to think of all-terrain vehicles as rough, rugged and consisting of at least three wheels, but the Taurus aims to change all of that and also be easier to transport by car (packed right into the trunk).

This 2×2 has two-wheel drive and a Honda GX-210 four-stroke engine delivering power to both front and rear wheels, pushing and pulling its way over muddy banks, through narrow gorges – it provides a smooth ride over rough terrain. Think of it like a tank … but on wheels instead of treads.

The vehicle has a top speed of 22 miles per hour, which might not sound like much but that’s not the point – the idea is to give you traction and durability in all kinds of conditions.

Balloon tires and a semi-amphibious shell help you plow through water and over land. At the end of the day, it is designed to dismantle easily so you can take it on trips and deploy it from larger vehicles.

With luxury befitting Bruce Wayne and dark details worthy of Batman, this BMW concept bike by Istanbul-based Mehmet Erdem is a fresh take on a fancy ride.

The ‘Titan’ lets you lean into curves, hugging an aerodynamic frame with a side-clipped rear tire hugged by turn signals and break lights.

The whole thing looks as much like a transformer as a motorcycle, containing storage space or places for your hidden crime-fighting weaponry alongside the front wheel. Alas, like the Caped Crusader himself, this Dark Knight cycle is unlikely to go from concept to reality anytime soon.

It is one thing to make something like Steampunk in style, but to actually drive that device using steam power takes an entirely higher-order level of commitment and engineering.

Revatu Customs is the Dutch motorocycle shop behind the Black Pearl, this unique steam-driven creation named after Jack Sparrow’s pirate ship.

The rear wheel of the vehicle is driven by a large crankshaft – unfortunately, the power source is also the limitation of the entire operation: the bike only has a top speed of around five miles per hour. Still, for a relaxing trip through town sure to draw attention, it would definitely be a lot of fun to ride.

Blending the shared social experience of driving and riding in a car with the liberating freedom to go your own way, this concept vehicle turns from one 4-wheeler to two 2-wheelers on demand.

Proposed by Mark Wilson and executed in detail by ArgoDesign, the result is an asymmetrical design that is flat on one side where the two pieces join and curved on the other. The wheels spread out in motorcycle mode and contract in car mode.

“Chipp Walters, who designed several projects for NASA in the ’80s and ’90s, took lead on the project, and created what you see here. It’s what you might get if you crossed the little known 1980s cartoon M.A.S.K, the Akira motorcycle, the Batman Tumbler, and the Blade Runner Spinner—a seemingly plausible vision for a car that could split into two.”

An automated chassis lock hooks the two vehicles together, released at the push of a button. Originally pitched to Cadillac, the idea did not go over so well with conventional car companies, but perhaps in time.
