Looking at once visually plausible and conceptually impossible, the hacked automobiles in this art project visual expectations to make slightly-altered realities that boggle the brain.

José Quintela of Lisbon is a writer by trade but has been using Instagram’s layout application to collect and modify all shapes, sizes, makes and models of parked cars.

The vehicles themselves are so attention-grabbing, it takes a moment to notice the effect spills behind the borders of the bright cars themselves and into the surrounding built environment, subtly reshaping windows, walls and doors in likewise-improbable and humorous ways.

This ultra-slick motorcycle wouldn’t just catch the eyes of bystanders as you roll down the street. It’s almost guaranteed to literally stop traffic. The Full Moon Motorcycle from Akrapovic and Dreamachine Motorcycles is so unique as to be almost unrecognizable as a motorcycle.

The idea behind the design was to create something that defies definition. The Full Moon does that and then some with a seriously flashy body and some surprisingly sensible features.

Aside from its fanciful body that looks a bit like a long, silver wasp, the Full Moon features twin custom-made exhausts and a hydraulic suspension that keeps the bike standing upright even when parked.

The steering system is automated to get rid of visual clutter in the form of messy cables. The front end sports a whopping 30 inch aluminum and carbon wheel to complement the already-futuristic looking ride.

The bike has some impressive power, as well – sitting in the middle of that sleek body is an S&S Knucklehead 1,524 cc engine. The impressive bike is just a display concept for now, but it gained massive attention when it debuted at the Bad Salzuflen Custombike Show in Germany.

Flipping your car over usually translates to a very bad day, but this upside-down truck is actually a kind-of-enviable mode of transport.

The truck was built by mechanic Rick Sullivan over the course of six months. He says the build only cost him $6,000, which seems like a bargain.

The crazy spectacle started out as a Ford Ranger and a Ford F-150. The Ranger became the “guts” of the truck and the body of the F-150 was placed on top, upside-down.

When the truck is moving, its top tires spin as though they’re helping to propel the vehicle along. Although Sullivan gets plenty of attention while riding around in his wacky truck, he says he’ll never sell it.

If you had the choice between riding a regular bike to work and rolling up on the back of a dinosaur, you’d choose the dinosaur, right? Norwegian artist Markus Moestue did, and it turned into something completely awesome.

Starting with three bikes and welding them together, Moestue used styrofoam, a regular kitchen knife, and some serious carving skills to create his prehistoric ride.

After the body of the raptor-like dino was created, the artist covered it with epoxy glue and fiberglass coating. He painted it a fierce red-mottled orange and gave it creepy yellow eyes, sharp teeth, and a wicked tongue.

At that point, the dino became a mobile sculpture when Moestue attached it to his welded-together Frankenbike with two front wheels and one in back. The bike’s saddle and handlebars sit between the raptor’s front half and rear half.

Moestue created the raptor ride and cycled across Norway on it to protest the “dogmatic religious education of children” in which kids are taught that humans and dinosaurs once lived together.

The dreaded beeping of the alarm clock and subsequent morning drive to the office are arguably the worst part of every day. Designer Dominic Wilcox is banking on driverless cars as the future of commuting, and he’s designed possibly the most beautiful, relaxing one ever.

His remarkable self-driving stained glass car is more or less a bed on wheels. Built on a MINI platform, the car contains a mattress and the stained glass dome hinges upward to let you get in and out. The dome consists of a wooden skeleton with glass pieces carefully soldered on using the “copper foil” technique, the same method used to make Tiffany lamps.

Wilcox created the car for the 2014 Designjunction as part of the Dezeen and MINI Frontiers: The Future of Mobility exhibition. His was one of five concepts selected as an idea for a future MINI Cooper design.

In Wilcox’s vision, the cars of the future won’t need seat belts and airbags because they will be so safe. They also won’t need annoying design inhibitors like pedals and steering wheels, which frees up the entire interior for something more useful – say, a bed for catching some sleep on the way to and from work.

The cathedral-like interior seems quite serene. Wilcox’s goal was to merge parts of what he loves about the past – such as stained glass windows – with the mind-boggling technology of the future.

In any case, driverless cars are still likely quite a few years from being completely autonomous, so at the moment the rolling stained glass cocoon is just an alluring concept.
