While many players of the freshly-released Fallout 4 video game, set in post-apocalyptic Boston, are no doubt still wandering the digital wastelands, one creative fan has created a real working version of one favorite weapon: the flaming Shishkebab sword.

Game users can find this wonderful toy or make a do-it-yourself version from lawnmower, motorcycle and other scrapped parts. Like the virtual version, the real deal can be set aflame as shown in the video below.

Caleb Craft posted his work to Make, basing it on the game as well as concept art created by its makers. “There was one weapon in particular from the Fallout video game series that caught my eye. It was a flaming sword called a shishkebab.”

“Fashioned out of hammered lawnmower blades, a gas tank from a motorcycle, and other miscellaneous parts, this thing will ignite any monster you slash. I thought it would be a really fun build.”

3D printing guns is one thing, but 3D printing railguns that can fire metal projectiles at 250 meters per second is quite another, none of which stopped this creator from making his video game dreams a physical reality. While it may look like a geeky dress-up accessory you would not even notice at a comic convention, this is the real deal.

The weapon in question has six capacitors weighing 20 pounds and providing 1,800 joules of energy per round. Parallel electrodes fire an armature bullet while an Arduino Uno R3 monitors charging levels and temperature.

3D CAD drawings show how the thing was designed and built and test fires show the contraption denting steel and plywood. The projectiles do not survive the mission.

It sort of sounds like fun abstractly, or in the hands of a Burning Man artists or art car, but in practical reality, someone is probably going to get burned. Still, if you really want to go wild, you can duel-wield as well, like the individual in the video above.

Sound waves may not be visible to the naked eye, but they can certainly be felt. In recent times, scientists have been experimenting with using sound waves to levitate objects. But predating those experiments is an object called a Rubens’ Tube, a physics apparatus that shows how sound waves and sound pressure interact.

Shown at top, the Rubens’ Tube is a tube with holes drilled along its side. One end is capped and fitted with a propane supply, and the other end is plugged with a small speaker. When the propane is lit and the speaker is turned on, varying amounts of pressure are released from the holes. The flames, then, display differing heights based on the internal sound pressure.

The science video blog Veritasium recreated the Rubens’ Tube in the form of a “Pyro Board,” a flat plane that uses the same principles as the Rubens’ Tube. It is a two-dimensional plate with 2,500 holes through which flames erupt, changing height based on the flow of gas which is affected by the volume of the music.
