LEGO works are usually self-limiting, forcing you to build from static platforms on flat surfaces, but LEGO-based tape lets you take those designs into three dimensions, attaching them to walls and ceilings around you.

Developed by Nimuno, a design studio inspired by LEGO, the flexible tape can be cut into different lengths and features adhesive backing so it can be attached to walls, floors and other objects.

Roads, trains, houses and castles can sprout from basically any surface, turning your entire domicile into a veritable kingdom of abstract and concrete LEGO creations. A few rolls costs around $10 – pretty good for something so cool.

Seeing is believing for some VR users, but to truly top off the virtual reality experience one needs to be able to touch imaginary worlds, which the Dexmo exosuit lets users do. Made by Dexta Robotics, this exoskeleton provides tactile feedback in response to what users are seeing and interacting with in virtual environments.

The system also enhances usability, its fingertip-level force working in both directions – users can feel feedback but the game or other environment can also respond more minutely and accurately to user inputs, completing the experience.

The trick behind the tech is to couple fast-acting sensors and a light-touch frame that provides flexibility but also translates inputs precisely. Bonus: the whole system is wireless. For now, the critical limitations are in the software, which is being worked on by the team prior to public market release.

New build-a-drone kits combine LEGO bricks and off-the-shelf parts designed by Flybrix to create kid-friendly, wirelessly-controlled drones made to be easily reassembled if they run into something and crash. In the words of another famous kid-friendly robot: disassemble, reassemble!

Flybrix is a San Francisco startup aiming to make drone-building easier and more accessible. Their kit-based flyers can be controlled via Bluetooth by an iOS or Android smartphone (or custom controller).

Children learning to fly need not worry about running these indoor-friendly bots into walls – they can be involved in collisions then put back together. The basic kit contains a few dozen pieces and instructions to build a small quadcopter in just 15 minutes – other advanced kits let kids expand and modify the basic drone (or build their own).

“Co-founders of the startup, Amir Hirsch, Robb Walters and Holly Kasun, want to get teens, or younger kids with adult supervision, interested in things like geometry, aerodynamics and electrical engineering.” While the company isn’t an official LEGO partner, their gadgets are all LEGO-compatible add-ons. One the cofounders has three degrees in math and electrical engineering from MIT, where he first got the inspiration to create Flybrix.

The ‘bookmark light’ by Kouichi Okamoto “uses a conductive ink that transmits electricity through the help of a lithium coin battery. The grid utilizes ink with nano size silver particles between a layer of film that forms the liquid crystal.”

The transparency provides a fun way to see how the gadget works, and the simple on/off function makes for easy use as a light while the flat configuration makes for a simple bookmark. All in all, a pretty simple but neat way to get a little illumination for your bedroom or travel reading.

The device was created in “collaboration with business venture Agic Inc. of the University of Tokyo – the interactive design can be used as page tab or as a illuminative source, allowing one to carry on reading without disturbing a sleeping partner.”
