The smart toothbrush trend that started with sonic brushes is being taken to the next level with upcoming Prophix video toothbrushes letting you see inside your own mouth, live on your phone while you brush.

A small HD camera records high-definition videos and pictures of your mouth, probably giving you a closer look than you ever thought you wanted of everything you’re doing right and wrong in your daily routines.

A series of interchangeable attachments including a picking tip and tiny mirror are aimed at helping you get things cleaner once you see more closely what’s wrong. Having a camera also helps you keep track of changes (hopefully improvements) over time in terms of areas brushed.

At $400, this will be one of the most expensive electric toothbrushes on the market, seemingly more than the app or the camera additions should be worth (twice the price of a high-end Sonicare) but perhaps worth it for people with persistent oral hygiene issues.

In addition to an array of other useful features, this futuristic mobility-aiding cane contains a camera and facial recognition software to help the visually impaired pick friendly faces out of the crowd.

The cane is a widely-recognized and frequently-used staple for those who cannot see well or at all, and thus an idea vessel to enhance with GPS and other computer-driven aids. The device is being designed by Waheed Rafiq, Steve Adigbo, and Richard Howlett, researchers at Birmingham City University in the United Kingdom, and still just a prototype at this point.

In terms of face-seeing software: the built-in camera takes continuous images, searches for faces, then scans them against a database tied to your social profiles or other uploaded images (you can also use the cane itself to take new photos for the database). When a match is found, the user is notified via bone-conduction earpiece designed to cut down on auditory distractions.

The long-term vision is a commercial version but that is still a ways off. The goal is also to include only what is necessary in the cane, perhaps primarily hardware, leaving the heavy lifting to modular software components or third-party devices already in hand (like mobile phones). Other smart canes are also in development, some being marketed for as little as $40, but with far fewer features.

Just 2.5 inches on a side (and weighing under 2 ounces) but smart enough to avoid collisions on autopilot (while also checking its position against your smartphone), Zano one of the smallest yet most versatile drones on the market. It can be set to follow you wherever you go while using infrared sensors to stay clear of trees, animals or other objects that might come up in its path.

The drone can be driven manually in a variety of ways if you want to control what it is shooting or where it is capturing videos or images from, but can also be left to its own devices, so to speak, leaving you free to move below it. If it runs low on energy or straying too far afield, the tiny flyer hones in on and returns to the location of your mobile device. Meanwhile, you can also check its status manually at any time via a simple user-friendly interface.

Zano can be recharged via microUSB and take pictures at up to 5 megapixels – bandwidth remains the biggest limiting factor in current models but can be addressed down the line with software upgrades (no hardware limitation prohibiting improvements on that front). For around $200, the price point makes it an appealing alternative to other drones and cameras on the market as well.
