The latest addition to a growing arsenal designed to protect restricted airspace from drone incursions, this web-shooting bazooka is a surprisingly low-tech but sensible way to down a small autonomous aircraft in a hurry.

The SkyWall 100 launches a net into the air, tangling up quadcopter blades and bringing them back down to Earth. Developed by engineers in the United Kingdom, the device weighs just 22 pounds and is powered by compressed air.

The SkyWall can fire up to 300 feet and deploy a parachute, allowing the drone to be kept relatively intact should the need arise for law enforcement officials to examine and analyze it.

Developed by Open Works Engineering, the gadget features a smart scope that uses predictive algorithms to assist in targeting (helpful if the drone is in motion, for instance) and a quick-reload system for multiple drones.

Police in Japan have started using the net-firing system, while students at Michigan Tech University have adapted the idea further, adding a similar system to a drone, allowing one drone to snag and drag another back to base.

3D printing guns is one thing, but 3D printing railguns that can fire metal projectiles at 250 meters per second is quite another, none of which stopped this creator from making his video game dreams a physical reality. While it may look like a geeky dress-up accessory you would not even notice at a comic convention, this is the real deal.

The weapon in question has six capacitors weighing 20 pounds and providing 1,800 joules of energy per round. Parallel electrodes fire an armature bullet while an Arduino Uno R3 monitors charging levels and temperature.

3D CAD drawings show how the thing was designed and built and test fires show the contraption denting steel and plywood. The projectiles do not survive the mission.

Shifting from darts to balls, this new line of Rival shooters from Nerf are hitting (and flying off the shelves at) record speedings, firing projectiles at 70 Miles Per Hour and featuring quick-reload features to keep the fun going faster.

Announced months ago, made available for preorders in August and now openly for sale, the air-powered Apollo XV-700 and battery-powered flywheel rifle Zeus MXV-1200 both fire small round dimpled spheres. Like miniature golf balls, but softer, these depressions put spin on the balls, helping stabilize them for flight and making them far more accurate than even a tail-feathered Nerf dart.

The Apollo model stores air in the stock of the gun and lets you reload by dropping the bottom of your handle/clip on top of expended ammunition. Overall, these definitely seem targeted, so to speak, at adults who are looking to get back into the game with a bit more firepower than traditional for-kids equivalents would allow.

If anything, these are more competition for laser tag or paintball than other Nerf products. They also each come in both red and blue, implying a design decision to help make team games easier as well.

Combining the speed of a hot glue gun, the flexibility of Play-Doh, the fun of custom furniture creation and aesthetics of organic materials, this custom technique turns trashed plastic into complex works of furniture.

As the above set of inspirations suggests, James Shaw is attempting to deal with a lot of problems at once, including our personal associations with plastic as a material, the incredible amount of wasted plastics in the world, and the typically boring look of most mass-produced plastic furniture.

The key to these creations: a custom-built gun that heats up and ‘shoots’ plastic like one might deploy hot glue, except at 1 inch diameters and with more solid materials it becomes not just an adhesive but a structural foundation.

“If you think about wood, you can think about some beautiful hardwood desk that your grandfather owned or something, and you can connect with that object. People have a warm feeling towards materials like wood,” he says. Plastic, on the other hand? Not so much. “People don’t have that warm feeling towards plastic, people generally have a quite negative feeling towards it as a material. My belief is that it’s simply how we’re approaching it.”

While it is hard not to notice the similarity to toothpastes, Shaw hopes people will appreciate other references in the work as well, particularly to 18th-Century life and design: “these suites, generally comprising a bureau, a mirror, and two candle stands were the height of luxurious furnishing. These pieces reference this trope, reinterpreting these forms in a distorted and blobby manner, in the color scheme of a palace belonging to Catherine the Great.”
