Sketching and drawing on tablet computers just doesn’t offer the same sensations or tactile feedback of paper. What they do offer is a ton of high-tech tools and the ability to do things that would be difficult to impossible on paper. Pencil from design studio FiftyThree is a stylus designed to be used with the award-winning iPad app Paper.

The Pencil provides users with the ability to blend and erase with the very same tool – flip it over to erase, just like a real pencil. It’s charged via USB and can last up to a month on a single charge. The Pencil replaces a traditional stylus or a user’s finger and makes the experience of creating art more realistic and more intuitive. Since the stylus is approximately the same size and shape of a pencil, the experience feels even more like traditional analog drawing.

When used with the Paper app, even left-handed artists can draw without fear of their palms smearing their work. Paper has active palm rejection technology, which means that it recognizes the user’s palm and ignores it while the artist works. No smudges, no frustration. The Pencil can work as a normal stylus on any other device, even without the Paper  app. The device comes in walnut finish for $60 USD or $50 USD.

The iSpoon is a clever iPad stylus that basically puts a capacitive tip on the end of a small wooden spoon. You probably wouldn’t want to use the spoon for stirring and then for operating your iPad for fear of dripping onto the screen, but the spoon side can definitely be used as a spoon.

The FLAXUS is a colorful slap bracelet that can be worn around the wrist, on a bag strap, or anywhere that it can wrap around.

But when you take the FLAXUS off and uncoil it, it becomes a sturdy stylus that you can use for all of your tablet computing needs. There are dual conductive tips that let you use either end of the device. It works with any capacitive touchscreen device, and it’s washable – just in case you manage to drop it in your coffee.

The fashion aspect of the FLAXUS may not appeal to everyone, but being able to keep a stylus in an easily-retrievable spot can be immensely helpful. You can use a stylus instead of your fingers in situations where your fingers aren’t suitable, like when you’re at the beach, wearing gloves or trying to look up what temperature the oven needs to be at while your hands are covered in dough.

There isn’t much to say about the device that can’t be learned from its very descriptive name. It includes a stylus for your iPad/iPhone/iTouch, a laser pointer for annoying people at the movies or pointing to important pictures in your work presentations…and an ink pen, whatever that’s for.

We dig the simple, refined aesthetic that means you don’t have to go hunting down interchangeable tips: the functions are all kept right there in the main body.
