Whether you’re seething or psyched about the upcoming Spider-Man movie reboot, this compilation of clips from the 1970s Japanese Spider-Man TV show should temporarily satisfy your need for web-slinging action. Below are nine whole minutes of over-the-top Supaidaman glaring, grappling and totally appropriate crouching.

In the Japanese version of the superhero series, Spider-Man was a lot like the Power Rangers, fighting giant monsters from inside his insane mecha. Unlike the American version in which a teenager is bitten by a radioactive spider, the Japanese version sees young motorcycle racer Takuya Yamashiro stumble upon a crashed alien ship. He finds a bracelet that gives him spider powers and lets him control the alien ship as his own personal mecha.

This trailer for Japanese Spider-Man (all 41 episodes of which are available to watch for free on Marvel’s website) gives just a taste of how different that version is from the one America grew up with. Maybe the biggest, most puzzling difference is the fact that our young hero doesn’t zip around the city on strings of spider silk; he instead rides around in his car. The delicious cheesiness of this 70s spectacle is the perfect way to waste approximately 17 hours.

The post Look Out!
DARPA has been funding superhero-inspired technology for years now, so it’s no surprise that they’ve teamed up with researchers at Cornell to create a futuristic palm-sized Spiderman-type device that will allow humans to scale walls, walk across ceilings, and perform gravity-defying operations with ease. The three-layer device uses surface tension and an electrical charge to create an incredibly strong bond that may be able to hold 15 pounds per square inch of device surface.

The palm-sized device consists of a metal plate dotted with super-small holes, a middle layer made of a porous material, and a bottom layer with a reservoir that holds water. A nine-volt battery supplies power to push water through the tiny holes, creating surface tension that can grip another surface. When switched on and off rapidly, the electrical charge could allow the device to be used for real-time ceiling or wall jaunts. The team found that the smaller the holes, the greater the adhesive force of the device.

The project, headed by engineering professor Paul Steen and former postdoctoral associate Michael Vogel, was funded by both DARPA and the National Science Foundation; the findings were published in the online Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

The post Tense Situation: Cornell’s Invention for Human Wall Walkers first appeared on Gajitz.
