As if Star Trek needed anymore anachronisms, it looks like the Enterprise wouldn’t have survived warp speed. A group of physicists at the University of Sydney discovered that arrival and landing of a craft running faster than the speed of light would be catastrophic.

In the 1990s, a Mexican physicist created The Alcubierre warp drive. It suggests that the space-time continuum be formed into a bubble around the spacecraft, allowing it to travel faster than the speed of light while conforming to the rules of special relativity. The theoretical mechanism was recently dusted off by some students and their professor at the University of Sydney.

They found that the spacecraft would collect debris along the bubble-shaped space-time continuum, with some even entering the bubble. Then came the landing: as the craft decelerates, all of the energy produced by The Alcubierre warp drive is released at once with such force that anything within contact would be completely destroyed. Sorry Mr. Sulu, you’re fired.

Eye-mounted or eye-embedded heads-up displays are no longer in the realm of science fiction. They’re getting closer all the time, and eventually they’ll be just as commonplace as our regular contact lenses of today. That’s the premise of Sight, a short film from Eran May-raz and Daniel Lazo. The futuristic plot puts us into a day in the life of Patrick, a creepy, somewhat maladjusted software engineer who both works on and uses Sight, a very popular HUD system embedded in the eyes.

The film shows us what our future could look like, with most entertainment, decorative objects, and even social interactions being either supplied or augmented by an always-on computer system. Would that world feel any less real than the one in which we live now? This outstanding sci-fi vision is so exciting and so chilling precisely because it could easily become a reality in our lifetime.

If you’re like us and you can’t get enough of The Walking Dead and other zombie fiction, you’ll no doubt be super-excited for Hyundai’s zombie apocalypse car. Created by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, the concept car is set to debut at Comic-Con and, from the looks of the concept drawings, is going to be crazy awesome.

Above, Kirkman describes part of the creative process and details a few of the car’s zombie-slaying features. Spikes on the sides and front, a scoop to push bodies out of the way and a sunroof gun turret are just a few of the cool features meant to keep people inside the car from being eaten by the undead. It’s all based on a Hyundai Elantra which is being souped up and tricked out just for geeks like us to drool over.

As far as campy, mocking sci-fi movies go, Spaceballs is probably the best one ever. The 1987 Mel Brooks film was made as a send-up of Star Wars and similar movies and gave us classic lines like “may the schwartz be with you.” The hovercraft driven by Dark Helmet was made to “fly” in the movie with a series of wires and a blue screen, but after the movie finished shooting its creator, Dean Jeffries, installed a motor in the vehicle to let it be driven under its own power.

Today, the little piece of sci-fi history sits in the Justice Brothers Museum. Jeffries is asked often to drive it in parades, which isn’t surprising. What is a bit surprising is the fact that the car has appeared in about 20 other movies, TV shows and music videos, according to the museum’s information. That knowledge kind of feels like a challenge to find and spot every single appearance of Dark Helmet’s hovercar ever caught on film.

Can you predict what your life will be like 30 years from now? Most of  us can’t even imagine how things will change in that much time, but Arthur C. Clarke was no ordinary human. The famed sci-fi writer and futurist seemed to have an almost supernatural ability to accurately predict the amazing new places technology would take us. In this Australian Broadcasting Company interview from 1974, Clarke hits the nail on the head over and over.

He accurately predicts that there will be a computer in every home connected to the rest of the world, and that our social and work lives will revolve around it. He pegs inventions like online banking, online shopping, and even telecommuting. Almost eerily, he was even able to tell the interviewer that people of the 21st century would take their computers for granted like people of the 20th century took the telephone for granted. Too bad he didn’t offer up any stock tips.
