Nearly 20 years and 1,000,000,000 Euros in the making, this fusion reactor in Germany, a potential harbinger of a huge shift in how we generate power around the planet. It is set to be turned on this month.

The Wendelstein 7-X stellarton fusion reactor creates energy by using massive coiled superconductors to generate magnetic fields. Contained hydrogen gas is then heated to until the atoms fuse.

The 50-foot ring features 250 access ports and houses 50 six-ton coils. The stellarators are harder to construct than their competing tokamaks but are much more robust and can be used continuously rather than just in short bursts. If this one works well, it will likely be the first of many.

Of all the things to send adrift at sea, you wouldn’t think a nuclear reactor would be one. History has already written several oceanic disasters, though luckily none of them nuclear. Meanwhile, many advancements have hopefully been implemented to prevent further disasters, as state-sponsored Russian nuclear power company Rosenergoatom, in collaboration with shipping corporation LLC Baltiysky Zavod Shipbuilding, have plans for the world’s first floating nuclear power plant.

An eye raiser indeed, the Akademik Lomonosov is set to be online by 2019. This atomic barge will feature two KLT-40 Naval Propulsion reactors that will have the ability to produce 70 megawatts (MW) of electricity, enough to produce power, heat and desalination for cities with populations around 200,000. Initial construction of the Akademik Lomonosov began in 2007. It’s cost is an estimated $232 million. When up and running, it will serve the town it was constructed in, Severodvinsk, as well as the plant that built it.

Concerns around the floating plant are numerous, with many writing it off as a floating nuclear weapon. The uranium involved, however, has only been lightly enriched, as opposed to the fully-enriched that powers other Russian nuclear power plants. This measure was taken to prevent the uranium from possible hijacking for use in a nuclear weapon. And in true vague Russian fashion, when asked about large problems that may occur with the plant, the ship’s owner replied that it would be “resilient in a disaster.” Comfort is something that has historically escaped Russian culture.

But it turns out that the creators of the show may have been more right about the effects of nuclear waste than anyone knew at the time. Recently, five fishermen in Argentina caught a real-life Blinky in a lake that receives runoff water from a nearby nuclear power plant.

Because the catch occurred at night, the fishermen didn’t notice the fish’s extra eye at first. But when they turned a flashlight onto the wolf fish in their boat, they were shocked to see the surplus eye staring back at them. The men who caught the mutant say they have been fishing in the same spot for years but have never encountered a creature like this before. Not surprisingly, they’ve decided to skip frying up this bizarre specimen – instead, they plan to send it off for scientific testing.

At least then you can save your friends the trouble of exploring the same places in the nuclear wasteland that you’ve already determined are dangerous.

There may very well be a good use for this tool pre-nuclear wasteland (like for people who live near the damaged Fukushima plant in Japan), but it almost seems like a tongue-in-cheek product poking fun at just how many things we trust our iPhones for these days. Nevertheless, it looks like a genuine product from Scosche that sells for a reasonable $249.99 – but it’s not available in the U.S. and it appears to be sold out to everyone at the moment.
