Welcomed by an erotic female ‘mission control’ voice, this incredible array of space suites combines direct references to outer space travel while conveying the overall aesthetics of 2001: A Space Odyssey and other topical science-fiction thrillers.

Everything has something to do from space, from the starry carpets and paint jobs to seemingly-floating beds and even rocket-booster-shaped ceiling lights. Guests get the sense they are living in either a space habitat, space movie or both.

Other nice touches include a space glove valet sticking out of the wall, ready to ‘hold’ your keys or cellular phone. Mockups of historic rockets and photos of real lunar adventures decorate the place as well.

Space-referencing materials can be found subtly throughout like foil, while the bookshelves are filled with both scientific and fictional works about space. Seriously, there is a lot of space in this place. Visit for yourself at the Kameha Grand Zürich Hotel, and pack your spacesuit if you really want to get into the mood, though depressurization is unlikely.

Whatever your sub-genre of science fiction, these marvelous manuals will help you assemble anything from your own space-and-time machine to a personal light saber. For starters, a little wibbly-wobbly and some timey-wimey along with an infinity or so of connectors and voila, instant Tardis (or TJARDISS if you prefer the Scandinavian name) just like The Doctor ordered.

No Jar-Jar requiried to craft your own light saber (LITSABBER), but you may need help from The Force, a bit of training and some special crystals to put it all together.

While we all know what happens if you try to make your own dinosaur (DINDASUR), it isn’t stopping them from making a new Jurassic Park (World) movie – this way at least you can play along and get eaten in the comfort of your own home laboratory.

Finally, for those not sure about skipping about time and space in a blue police box, the Delorean (DJILORIANN) from the Back to the Future film franchise might provide a retro-stylish alternative – bonus: it can also fly!

How often do we think about how different life would be if Earth had formed differently? This intriguing video explores what Earth’s sky would look like if our home planet had huge rings just like Saturn.

While the images are stunning on their own, it is interesting to think of just how differently entire societies would have evolved with these celestial rings in place around the planet. Would our religions and myths be drastically different? Would we have developed navigational technology sooner? Art, science and philosophy would definitely be extremely changed. But for now and forever, these questions are destined to be the stuff of speculation.

Science fiction movies are not exactly known for being the most accurate depictions of actual scientific laws. In other words, they’re usually more fiction than science. The smarty-pants team at io9 put together this handy graphic to help explain which movies adhere to the laws of physics and which adhere to a looser definition of reality.

Using criteria like “All Planets Have Earth Gravity” (they don’t) and “Dodging Faster-Than-Light Weapons” (you can’t), the chart shows the worst of bad science in popular movies. Not that movie science should always be good science, of course – that would be no fun. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the only two movies given a “clean bill of accuracy” are Apollo 13 and The Right Stuff: two space movies based on real events.

Say what you will about The Matrix and its sequels – the trilogy contains some groundbreaking cinematic effects and overall the movies are an unforgettable part of sci-fi history. That’s why we got so excited when we saw these “lost and forgotten” pieces of Matrix concept art. While we can’t say for sure they were ever lost or forgotten, they sure are awesome to look at.

The artists who create movie concept art are often only loosely guided to come up with impressive and memorable scenes, characters, settings and other movie components. These pieces are all from Richard Mahon and George Hull (via Coolvibe); some are nearly identical to their counterparts in the movies, and some are quite different than their final versions.

One thing that carries through from the concept art all the way to the movies is the dark and threatening tone. These pieces show the dreary and threatening time the movies are set in, and some of the horrifying mechanical inhabitants of the cloud-covered future.

Zion, the only remaining human city, is a huge part of the Matrix movies, formed by those who rejected the Matrix and those who were freed from it. These concept pictures give only a small hint of the vast levels and subterranean caverns the make up the city.

We won’t give away what happens in the trilogy (for the benefit of the four or five people on the planet who haven’t yet seen it), but suffice to say that these concept art images have us wanting to watch the whole thing back-to-back…again. Popcorn, anyone?
