In a stellar series of simple animations, you can watch some of the world’s most famous scientific minds execute video game moves based on their areas of discovery and expertise. Above, you can see Hawking’s special move: Wormhole. Below, Einstein dishes out some Special Relativity.

Darwin can dazzle you with his Evolution (above), then follow it up with a spin of Natural Selection (below).

Other key characters in this creative series include Marie Curie (below) with her Plutonium Punch, but also Pythagoras, who can hit you with his Pythagorean Theorem (a triangle formed by jumping up and angling back down). Newton packs Gravity and Tesla, of course, a Coil. All that remains, really, is for someone to turn this ingenious idea into an actual game – players would line up for a shot at this.

From creator Diego Sanches: “Seven famous scientists whose significant discoveries and inventions changed the world have been given superpowers based on their contributions to the field … including Stephen Hawking, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, Nikola Tesla, Marie Curie and Pythagoras as part of the ‘science combat’ series for Brazilian publication Superinteressante magazine. The playable figures each have ‘basic’ and ‘special’ attacks, with the latter linking to his or her discovery in the field of chemistry, medicine, mathematics or physics.” Click here to see more in the series.

The post Watch 7 Famous Scientists Fight as Superpowered 8-Bit Gifs first appeared on Gajitz.

We could make a lot of jokes about playing with your food and how you should absolutely do it at every opportunity. But it would probably be more fun to just print out a set of Open Toys so you can start turning your veggies into flying, rolling, and diving machines.

The Open Toys Project is a set of 14 3D-printable objects from Le FabShop that require little more than a few raw veggies and an imagination to enjoy. It is, in the words of the designers, “A Mr. Potato Head in the era of digital fabrication.”

The idea struck designer Samuel Bernier while he was at the annual Summer Workshop at the Domaine de Boisbuchet in southwestern France. His initial concept was to upcycle cork and wood pieces found in nature into simple toys using a 3D printer he had with him.

The workshop happened to coincide with harvest time at the estate, however, which led to instant inspiration: veggies were so much more fun (and easier to play with) than wood or cork. Bernier and his team invented toy pieces that let kids easily turn their vegetables into cars, flying machines, submarines, and wacky combinations of them all.

Le FabShop has published the 3D printing plans for all of the pieces, and they plan to continue designing new pieces. They also encourage other designers to try their hands at adding to the collection – because honestly, you can never have too many options when it comes to making apple airplanes and radish racecars.

The post Fun With Food: 3D Printed Pieces Turn Veggies Into Toys first appeared on Gajitz.

Drawing with a pen and paper is hard enough (unless you count those little hearts with smiley faces that we put on all of our memos), but drawing with nothing but sound just seems crazy. Jerobeam Fenderson accomplished a surprisingly awesome work of art using nothing more than sound waves and an old analog Tektronix oscilloscope.

Fenderson uses two channels from his audio interface – left and right – to create waveforms, otherwise known as sounds. He feeds the sounds into his oscilloscope, where one channel causes horizontal deflection and the other causes vertical deflection. Using some math and seriously impressive skills, he turns the sounds into pictures. Dancing pictures. Of mushrooms.

As can probably be expected, Fenderson has received plenty of emails telling him that his awesome project must be faked. However, he offers up complete details as well as a WAV file for other people to try it out. He hasn’t yet drawn an oscilloscope on mushrooms, which is apparently another frequently asked question on his site, but welcomes pictures from anyone who does manage it.

The post Dancing Mushroom Animation Drawn Entirely With Sound first appeared on Gajitz.

Creative people use a lot of tools to get their jobs done, but keyboards and mice are limited in their functionality. Neither are very intuitive, and they can be maddeningly imprecise. The Senic Flow controller is a wireless, programmable, gesture-controlled tool that can operate all of the tools you use to interact with the digital world.

The small round controller operates with three distinct input technologies for ultimate flexibility: hand gesture recognition, touch, and precise haptics. It has a rotating ring around its perimeter that gives you 360 degrees of movement freedom as well as touch-free gesture controls and intuitive touch controls. What you do with these features is entirely up to you because the Flow is completely programmable.

<iframe type='text/html' src='http://player.vimeo.com/video/112657511' height='350' width='468' allowfullscreen=' frameborder='0'>

The design team’s goal was to create a single controller that would be compatible with all of the most commonly used creative programs. They built in compatibility with Photoshop, Arduino, Youtube, Soundcloud, Spotify, and around 30 more. They are planning to build in even more compatibility, and since Flow is open source, programmers can build in functionality for every program they use.

According to Berlin-based Senic, the Flow was meant to be seamless and inconspicuous, fitting into your environment comfortably and easily with a minimum of visual disruption. It’s small enough to slip into a pocket so you can take it with you when you commute between work and home, and its programmed functions can be useful in both environments.

The first working prototype of the Flow is compatible with Mac devices; Senic is working on building in compatibility with iOS devices, Android, Linux, and Windows. It connects to your devices via Bluetooth Low Energy, but the company doesn’t say how long a single battery charge lasts. Flow’s IndieGoGo project has sailed past its funding goal and Senic plans to ship the first wave of Flows in summer 2015.

The post Programmable Wireless Controller Makes Creativity Easy first appeared on Gajitz.

The flexible display is a technology that’s really started to come into its own in the past several years, and printed electronics are keeping pace. The two naturally complement each other, and PrintScreen, a customizable thin-film touch display, is among the latest and most promising combinations. It is a digital fabrication of a super-thin flexible touch screen that allows even unskilled people to print custom flexible displays.

PrintScreen is the result of a collaboration between Simon Olberding, Michael Wessley, and Jürgen Steimle. The team chose to use electroluminescent phosphoric ink, a material that requires very little power to use and boasts a long life. It’s resilient to bending and manipulation, making it ideal for flexible displays.

The process starts with creating an image in any vector graphics program. The displays are fabricated using four layers printed on top of each other: a silver conductor, the dielectric (an electrical insulator that can be polarized when an electric field is applied), the phosphor (the aforementioned electroluminescent ink), and a translucent conductor. This process is normally carried out by screen printing.

The display can then be printed on a substrate. Because of the unique qualities of the flexible displays, there are very few limits in the type of substrate used, provided it is smooth. The displays can be printed onto paper, ceramic, leather, wood, plastic, and many more. They can also easily be made into touch sensors without the need for an additional overlay.

The team behind PrintScreen also came up with a method of instantly printing the displays with an inkjet printer. It would use paper that has already been prepared with all of the printed layers except for the ink. A normal inkjet printer is loaded with the electroluminescent ink and prints the design right onto the prepared display for an instant customized object.

The post PrintScreen: Lightweight, Flexible, Printable Displays first appeared on Gajitz.
