We’ve been playing Super Mario Brothers games for years, but we never really stopped to think about where Mario goes when he falls down into those holes in the ground and loses a life. Ryan Coleman thought about it, though – and he created this slightly disturbing version of the world into which Mario falls when we, as gamers, make a tragic misstep.

According to Coleman, after Mario falls into the pit he is subjected to all sorts of horrors like ghosts, zombies, bloodthirsty plants, spike pits and saw blades. The subterranean chamber of horrors might just make you feel terrible about letting Mario fall – or if you’re the sadistic sort, it might make you feel like dropping him in on purpose a few times.
