Wristwatch mavericks Tokyoflash have created a discreet way to check your blood-alcohol level for those times you had one (or two) too many pints. It is built into a wristwatch, and it’s not just a calculable chart. It’s called the Kisai Intoxicated and it includes a fully-functional breathalyzer.

After the air port is revealed from a cap on the side of the watch, it only takes one button push and five seconds of expelling air to reveal whether or not you need to hand over your keys. Unfortunately, its accuracy is not guaranteed. The Tokyoflash website even has a ‘for entertainment purposes only’ disclaimer.

One of the cooler aspects of the watch (aside from the display; Tokyoflash is famous for using post-modern ways to show you the time) is the game that comes programmed into the watch. It consists of a vertical line moving laterally. The goal is to stop it to line up with a marker in the center. It’s like a personal field sobriety test!

Even if it’s not officially accurate, the Kisai Intoxicated wristwatch raises awareness. If you’re highly intoxicated and have the mind to use this gadget, you would probably realize just how drunk you are. Now hail that cab!

Feeling the beat at a club or a party is even easier when you’ve got an accessory that turns sounds into flashing lights. The Kisai OTO Equalizer watch from TokyoFlash Japan is a slick watch that can not only tell time, but also acts as a graphic equalizer. The colored display reacts to music as well as ambient sound to produce a one-of-a-kind light show constantly.

The watch body and strap come in black, but the LCD display comes in blue, red, amber or green. The time is displayed horizontally with hours and minutes displayed in the first two columns and two rows. The seconds take up the third column and are read vertically.

When in equalizer only or equalizer + time modes (there is also a time-only mode), the watch picks up on ambient sounds and displays moving bars of light. The sound sensitivity can easily be controlled to make the watch more or less sensitive. The design is rechargeable, offering a month of battery life with minimal use or about seven hours with the equalizer turned on full-time.

The Kisai OTO watch began life as a fan suggestion in the TokyoFlash forums. German designer Sam Jerichow submitted the design in 2010 and was lucky enough to see it brought to reality. He was inspired by reruns of Knight Rider and the moving lights on the front of K.I.T.T.

After seeing the many – times – we’ve – featured – TokyoFlash – watches and concepts, the company sent us a few watches to peruse in person. We checked out the Kisai Denshoku, Kisai On Air, and Kisai Upload. We conducted some real-world tests, wearing the watches around for a few weeks and seeing how they worked, how they held up and (most importantly) how they looked. We tested out the Kisai Denshoku first because it was definitely the most unusual looking.

The Kisai Denshoku doesn’t feature a traditional face; rather, it has twelve illuminating bars under a piece of acrylic. Press a button on the side and the bars start lighting up: first the hours, then groups of ten minutes, then single minutes. The functionality is pretty difficult to grasp at first, but after a while we got the hang of it. It’s a heavy, substantial piece that looks best on a bigger wrist – but also makes a fashionable statement on a small wrist.

Next up was the Kisai On Air – one we had actually been eyeing on the TokyoFlash site for quite a while. The gorgeous timepiece has a simple but powerful display that involves only one digital “hand.” The hand points to the current hour and is itself composed of the current minutes. The watch was designed by a fan, voted into reality by the TokyoFlash community, and put into production based on its popularity. It includes a touch screen, date display, backlight, alarm, and an animation feature – and it is easily the coolest watch we’ve ever worn.

The Kisai Upload is one of TokyoFlash’s newest releases. It is another design that has a non-traditional display, though it’s quite easy to decipher. The stretched-out numbers become clear when the watch is tilted to just the right angle – much like the classic optical illusion. The truly unique feature of the Upload, however, is its included 2GB of memory. The MicroSD card can be replaced by any capacity card you choose. Data transfer is simple and doesn’t involve removing the card – you just use the included USB cable.

All of the watches we tested out were sturdy, substantial, well-made pieces. They’re surprisingly heavy and super stylish – and we can imagine them lasting for many years.
