    <p><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-15123" title="babyloid medical robot" src="https://gajitz.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/babyloid-medical-robot.jpg" alt="" width="468" height="351" /></p>
<p>For older people and those suffering from dementia, depression can be the only constant companion. A pet can help, but not all senior citizens with depression are able to take care of a pet. <a href="http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/onepercent/2011/12/baby-robot.html">Babyloid</a>, a baby-like robot developed at Chukyo University in Aichi prefecture, Japan, can help older people fight depression by giving them a companion to care for.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-15122" title="senior citizen dementia robot" src="https://gajitz.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/senior-citizen-dementia-robot.jpg" alt="" width="468" height="269" /></p>
<p>The robot is equal parts cute and creepy. Its wide-set eyes, unrealistic mouth and furry body all serve to keep Babyloid from looking too much like a grotesque human baby doll. But at the same time, its behavior &#8211; crying, smiling, sleeping and making real baby noises &#8211; is very similar to that of an actual baby.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-15121" title="dementia helping baby robot" src="https://gajitz.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/dementia-helping-baby-robot.jpg" alt="" width="468" height="235" /></p>
<p>By interacting with Babyloid for 90 minutes a day (in short 8-minute segments), users in a study were able to reduce some symptoms of depression. Although Babyloid may not be able to actually return a user&#8217;s affection, it seems that just having something to care for and to focus on can help older people feel happier and more satisfied with their lives.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-15120" title="baby robot senior citizens" src="https://gajitz.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/baby-robot-senior-citizens.jpg" alt="" width="468" height="448" /></p>
<p>The first Babyloid prototype cost well over $25,000 to produce, but its creator hopes to produce future consumer models for closer to $1200. The price would still be too steep for most individuals, but a Babyloid or two would be an outstanding investment for nursing homes.</p><p>The post <a href="https://gajitz.com/furry-baby-like-robot-fights-depression-in-senior-citizens/">Furry Baby-Like Robot Fights Depression in Senior Citizens</a> first appeared on <a href="https://gajitz.com">Gajitz</a>.</p>

    <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-14930" title="MIT AGNES suit" src="https://gajitz.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/MIT-AGNES-suit.jpg" alt="" width="468" height="425" /></p>
<p>Seniors are one of the fastest-growing demographics in the world, but it seems that they are still largely ignored when designers conceive and test new ideas. To combat this age blindness, the MIT Agelab created <a href="http://alum.mit.edu/pages/sliceofmit/2011/12/28/what%E2%80%99s-it-like-to-be-75-years-old-try-this-on/">AGNES</a> (Age Gain Now Empathy System), a suit that is designed to mimic the physical limitations of an older person. The suit decreases flexibility and mobility, makes the user feel off-balance, slows their gait and even simulates hearing and vision losses.</p>
<p><iframe loading="lazy" width="468" height="238" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/czuww9rp5f4?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<p>AGNES is supposed to make its wearer feel like he or she is approximately 75 years old. Its purpose isn&#8217;t simply to instill empathy in the wearer (though that does seem like a handy side effect). Rather, the suit is meant to help designers understand what it is like to live in an aging body. If a product designer or city planner has the opportunity to step into an age suit like this and experience the world in an older person&#8217;s body, perhaps their work will begin to reflect features that are easier for older people to use.</p><p>The post <a href="https://gajitz.com/reverse-exoskeleton-makes-you-feel-older-maybe-wiser/">Reverse Exoskeleton Makes You Feel Older, Maybe Wiser</a> first appeared on <a href="https://gajitz.com">Gajitz</a>.</p>
