The original must-have gaming system is back on the market with the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition. At a glance, it looks just like its predecessor, but clearly much smaller as it fits in the palm of your hand.

The device connects to your TV and comes with a controller also like the original, though it additional connects to the Wii. No cartridges needed for this bad boy, which comes prepacked with dozens of games.

Bonus round: game-specific passwords are not a problem and you can stop at any point along the way, picking up where you left off with ease. Meanwhile, the games are as follows – basically, all the classics:

Designed by Matchbox Instruments, the design is currently a prototype and its components disposable, but they hope to bring it to market with rechargeable or replaceable battery options.

Sure, you could also carry a flashlight, but this is small and handy, something you could toss in a purse or pocket or bug-out bag.

This portable handheld device lets you measure the molecular fingerprint of anything around you, from the alcoholic and caloric content of the cocktail in your hand to the water content and soil quality supporting your hanging houseplants.

Using a combination of technologies borrowed from both big laboratory spectrometers and mobile-device optics, this miniature gadget measures reflected light, breaks down its spectrum, pings the cloud and uses algorithms to return what amounts to a sophisticated search engine query result (within about 5 seconds).

The implications of this are much bigger than the device itself – suddenly, the material makeup of the world around you is both physically and compositionally at your fingertips. You can use it to devise what natural materials, edibles or medications actually contain, then determine the health of your garden plants, the calory content of a shake or how long it might take for your fresh fruit to ripen.

Like 23andMe and other personal data-driven companies: with each query users are building and reinforcing the core database of results. While users are (likely for legal reasons) discouraged from using it as a medical device, it can be employed to determine things like artificial additives or dangerous pesticides on processed foods or produce. The device sells for around $250 and is compatible with ioS and Android devices. The best part about it: each new user will help drive down the price of future versions of the device, all while making it more accurate over time.

Pre-installed with Windows, this latest competitor for world’s smallest computer is the size of a flash drive, plugs right into a monitor and gives you an operating system that fits neatly in your pocket.

Made by Archos, this device competes on price with other manufacturers who have recently released similar designs, including Lenovo and Intel. It features an Intel Atom Z3735F quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of onboard flash storage, and built-in Wi-Fi as well as a Micro-SD card slot. Lacking ports, it still requires accessories so you will have to bring your own wireless-capable keyboard and mouse to the table, but is still a powerful upgrade in terms of portability for users with home and work setups (you can simply transport your computer-on-a-stick in between).

“To control and operate the ARCHOS’ PC Stick, users can connect keyboards, mice, and other accessories to the device through Bluetooth or an USB port. In addition, the PC Stick is compatible with all Windows, Android, and iOS keyboard applications and game controls, transforming any smartphone or tablet into a keyboard.” Other models are also coming out from different makers for Linux and Chrome for those averse to Windows – the field is rich with competitors in this booming little industry. “Companies have constantly pushed boundaries to make computers smaller, and we’ve taken this challenge to the next level by offering a matchbox-sized PC for less than $100,” says Loic Poirier, CEO of ARCHOS. “Mobility is at the center of our lifestyles and the PC Stick allows us to be on-the-go and productive.”

Since mobile devices today have world’s more computing power than PCs of a decade or two ago, it makes sense that sooner or later a peripheral could double as an entire computer of its in, in this case putting that computer in a mouse and quite literally in the palm of your hand.

The Mouse Box by Przemysław Strzelczyk works as a mouse normally would, but contains a processor, storage, HDMI connection and wifi capabilities as well. As the one external computing accessory people travel with, this seems like the right type of device in which to put a whole computer.

The next step: creating a wireless charging mouse pad, since energy is likely to be the most limiting factor, as it is with smartphones. Hopefully a model further in the future could contain some kind of projection device, eliminating the need to carry a screen as well.

And here are the specs: 1.4GHz ARM Cortex CPU, 128GB flash storage (cloud storage optional), Micro HDMI port, Wi-Fi connectivity and 2 x USB 3.0 ports. “From now on,” says its creator, “you don’t need to buy a few devices to keep your computer always at hand. Mouse-Box uses the power of a mouse, an invariable component in a computer set for many years.”
