Replicating 3D-recorded movements of professional chefs, this culinary machine is designed to stir, pour, adjusts temperatures and adds ingredients so as to be indistinguishable from having a world-renowned cook right in your kitchen.

The trick is not, however, in the capturing, but in the complex robotics that go into making something that can simulate the movements of hands, in this case using 20 motors, 24 joints and 129 sensors that can properly mimic human motions.

Mark Oleynik, founder of Moley Robotics, expects their machine to hit mass-market production in 2017, serving demand initially in commercial and then home kitchens, with eventual applications that could go well beyond just cooking.

Users will be able to use their computer or mobile device to pick any one of thousands of dishes and instruct their robots to make them remotely so their meal is ready and waiting when they get home. While this is far from the first attempt to turn robotics to cooking, it is probably the most complex such endeavor to date – other cooking bots can boil, stir and do other basic tasks, but not fully replicate the processes of a professional.

Form meets function in this sleek water-saving faucet design that uses a system of turbines to create variegated flows of different kinds, each also reducing the water output at any given time. This so-called Swirl Faucet was designed Simin Qiu, a student at London’s Royal College of Art.

The design is meant to be both visually pleasing but also quite functional – a button-touch interface lets you change settings quickly and easily.

Meanwhile, each configuration creates a slightly different lattice-like pattern reminiscent of DNA or fractals – definitely well-suited to a semi-public space like a kitchen but equally useful in a bathroom.

An attractive alternative to traditional spouts, the sleek look was the product of a great deal of sketching and design development – it reduces water usage by 15% or more as currently conceived but could also be further optimized for additional savings.

We’ve seen all kinds of foods go “artisanal” lately. The old habits of just buying all of your food from the grocery store are changing, and people are learning how to make wine, beer, cheese, soda, and a ton of other foods at home.

You can now add cooking oil to that list. The Daily Expeller from designers Jyh-Zern Shen, Yu-Hsin Wu, and Po-Chun Chiu lets you turn ordinary nuts and seeds into delicious, fresh, cold-pressed oils for cooking or salad dressing.

Although oil has gotten a bad name in the past, nutrition experts now say that eating heart-healthy oils in moderation is an important part of a balanced diet. The Daily Expeller would let us bring the oil pressing procedure right into the kitchen so we can go from a handful of walnuts to a small quantity of ultra-fresh walnut oil in very little time.

The process works something like this: the nuts or seeds are poured into the expeller’s cup and then warmed up. You pulverize them with a simple movement of a couple of external levers, then attach a little vial of water to steam the nut meal. Finally, you empty the smashed nuts into a small container and begin the process of pressing out the oil. Start to finish, the process takes around 15 minutes.

For every 100 grams of nuts that you feed into the machine, you get about 20 ml of oil, which is just the right amount for a meal serving two people. The entire process happens right there on your countertop so you can feel a sense of satisfaction from being involved in every part of the production process.

No matter how big the inside of your fridge is, it seems like the amount of stuff you keep in there will expand to fill the space – and then some. This rather clever invention gives you a little more storage room in the icebox by suspending your bottled drinks from its ceiling.

Using ultra-strong neodymium magnets, the BottleLoft from designer Brian Conti lifts bottles off of the shelves to make space for important stuff like leftover pizza.

Each BottleLoft consists of an eight-inch-long plastic rail with three embedded neodymium magnets graded N52, the strongest you can get. The whole assembly attaches to the roof of your fridge with a specially designed adhesive strip that is specifically meant for cold environments like the inside of a refrigerator.

Once you clean off the surface with an alcohol wipe, you stick one side of the adhesive to the fridge and then stick the BottleLoft to the other side. You can install several so your fridge can hold a six-pack or two of bottles. The adhesive can later be scraped off with a putty knife if you need to remove it.

The only drawback here would be for people who prefer to drink from cans rather than bottles, but there are other products out there for them. The BottleLoft is on Kickstarter with a modest goal of $20K which it quickly surpassed.

The Aromafork from Molecule-R plays on the fact that our taste buds can only recognize five basic tastes: sour, sweet, salty, bitter, and umami (or savory). The rest of our food’s taste comes from aromas hitting the back of the palate. The Aromafork has a small, removable paper membrane just behind the tines.
