Inventors David Krippendorf and Ryan Tseng created a kitchen-friendly container with a lid that only unlocks when you want it to. The lid has a built-in timer that controls the lock so that the contents are impossible to reach until the timer reaches zero, in turn keeping your hands out of the proverbial cookie jar.

And the Kitchen Safe isn’t limited to sugary treats; it’s also a great way to keep your (or your kids’) hands off of electronics except for at designated times. As with seemingly every brilliant or interest-peaking invention, the Kitchen Safe was initiated by a Kickstarter campaign. The Virtual Fridge Lock from “diet reeducation program” Meta Real puts your entire social network right in the middle of your diet by alerting them when you go for a late-night nosh.

Participants in Meta Real’s eating plan get the device when they sign up. It attaches to the fridge door of the dieter and sends a message out to his or her online buddies when the fridge door opens late at night. The threat of social humiliation might be enough to deter the dieter from grabbing an unhealthy late-night snack – and if not, the encouraging messages from friends might just do the trick.
