Blowing Up: Rolling Out World’s First Self-Inflating Bike Tire

Pulling your bike out for a fun ride only to discover that both of the tires are low is one of the most frustrating experiences for a cyclist. If you never had to deal with a low tire again, would it inspire you to ride your bike more often? The PumpTire is the world’s first self-inflating bike tire, and it promises to give you more time enjoying your ride.

The PumpTire works by pulling air in from the atmosphere as you ride. The attached valve measures the tire’s pressure, and when it reaches the desired level the air pathway is closed.

Two different models appeal to the casual rider and the more serious commuter. The tires can be used on normal rims with no special equipment. The project is currently looking for funding on Kickstarter so that the existing prototype can be turned into a commercially-viable product.
